How to make Betty Crocker Chocolate Icing better?

So I have the Betty Crocker chocolate icing. I realized its not exactly as smooth or soft as I would want it to be. I make the cake at night, let it cool, put on the icing, put it in a plastic container over night, wake up the next day, and the icing turns out really hard and bleh. Is there anything I can ADD to that icing to make it softer and smoother without ruining the taste? Thanks :D
