How can i get a job horseback riding on trails?

i really want this job, but i have minimal experience riding, but i want to learn. im only 18, so i dont have money to spend on lessons and stuff like that. the trail ride i went on a couple days ago, i asked the leader how to start out doing it, and he said to just hang out near those places alot, and read books on how to ride.... is there any more advice i should take?
